Letter to the Editor: Climate Change Must Change

TREVOR RAYHONS

Cedar Falls — From wind energy, to solar power, I have grown up watching the state of Iowa work efficiently and effectively on an enormous problem the world is facing: climate change. It is mandatory that the United States, one of the leaders in global pollution transition to a clean energy plan. We not only have the technology to do so, but it will also be economically beneficial and it will help make the Earth a cleaner, healthier, and better place to live for generations to come.
Currently, the state of Iowa generates close to 30 percent of its power from wind energy, more than any other state. We have all watched as wind turbines have slowly dotted our countryside, and we are even starting to see more and more solar panels be installed on tops of businesses and even on homes. Why though are we only at 30 percent clean energy and not more? Why isn’t clean energy growing quicker if it is better for the world we live in? There are various reasons, but it all boils down to the officials we elect into office to vote and make decisions based on what they believe to be best for this country.
I want to urge the people of Iowa, as we grow closer to caucusing our presidential candidates, to vote for someone who supports your values and who believes that we need to invest a more effective cleaner energy plan. We are running out of time. The climate is changing, and we the people need to make a difference.
