Last Saturday and Sunday, UNI hosted the men and women’s Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Indoor Championships in Cedar Falls; the men’s team achieved a third place finish and the women’s team came in fifth overall. At the end of all the action on Saturday, 14 athletes were sent to Sunday’s finals.

The Panthers have not had a home meet since Jan. 28 and on that date, both teams came in second place.

Senior Brandon Carnes was awarded Most Outstanding Track Athlete honors for the second year in a row, after receiving first place in the 60 meter dash and the 200 meter dash for all four years of his college career. This is the first time a feat like this has been achieved in school history as well as the entire MVC. Carnes finished the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.60, just .01 away from his personal record (PR) and then ran a 21.30 second 200 meter dash.

Daurice Fountain placed third overall in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 7.99 seconds. His efforts last weekend tied his fastest career time, ranked him No. 5 as a Panther and also earned him another all-conference honor.

Xavior Williams scored UNI some points after he placed fifth in the men’s high jump with a jump of 6-10.00. Shawn Koch and Charles Brown both placed in the top eight for UNI in the triple jump event.

For the women’s team, Maddie Bell placed sixth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.11 seconds.

Lyndsie Schinkel earned all-conference honors in the 800 meter dash, she finished with a time of 2:10.50 and placed third overall.

All-conference cross country runners Ashley Norem and Hannah Truniger ran strong in the 3,000 meter run. Norem earned second place with a time of 9:56.07 and Truniger finished shortly after claiming the third place finish with a time of  9:57.72.

Both the men and women’s next meet will consist of a weekend long tournament in College Station, Texas for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
