UNI faculty considers furloughs

A recent survey of University of Northern Iowa faculty found that the faculty is open to a number of solutions to resolve UNI’s budget crisis.

A majority of faculty members were willing to consider taking furloughs, but 93 percent of respondents also said that UNI’s administration needed to be “accountable for recent increases in administrative and executive positions before agreeing to faculty pay cuts,” according to the survey.

Chris Martin, a professor of communication studies at UNI and a Communications Committee member for United Faculty, the union that represents UNI faculty, said that if furlough days were enacted, most professors would continue working through them.

“I haven’t talked to any faculty who would actually take time off,” Martin said.

While Martin said lay-offs are in the “realm of possibility” for UNI, he said that avoiding them has been a major priority for faculty.

“We don’t want to see course offerings decrease … (Students) would be paying more and getting less,” he said.

United Faculty met with the state Board of Regents Wednesday to negotiate a deal to cut UNI’s budget and enact cost-saving measures.

At press time, information regarding the meeting was not available.
