BOR to convene at UNI

The state Board of Regents will meet Wednesday, Feb. 4 and Thursday, Feb. 5 in Maucker Union at the University of Northern Iowa campus to discuss agenda items such as a TIER study update, an economic development presentation on UNI’s Business and Community division and a report on an alternative Regent Admission Index for admissions. 

While on campus the Board will review a proposal from the Admissions Study Team Final Report. This proposal presents an alternative Regent Admission Index, reviewing Iowa students from high school that do not provide class rank, according to a media brief. If the Board approves the proposal, it will be implemented for the Summer/Fall 2016 admission of incoming freshmen.

This will also be the first full Board meeting for newly appointed Regent Sherry Bates. Regent Bates was appointed to the position Dec. 22, 2014 after Regent Nicole Carroll announced her resignation late November.

The Board looks to receive an update on the presidential search for the University of Iowa. UI’s president, Sally Mason, announced her retirement Jan. 15.

The Debate team has been around for a number of years at UNI, but has been rejuvenated this year with new members and a new director. Squid Monteith was named ‘2024 New Director of the Year.’

UNI has been collecting feedback from students and community members to redesign the Maucker Union rooftop plaza. Before the building was constructed in 1967, the site had two intersecting sidewalks. The rooftop being walkable has always been an important part of the union’s design.

In the 1930s, the Homeowners Land Corporation created a series of redlining maps, like the one above of Waterloo, Iowa. These maps classified areas of the cities based on the level of real estate security, which likely played a role in companies denying loans to minority populations for decades. The effects are still felt today, with Wallstreet 24/7 ranking Waterloo as the sixth worst place to be Black in the United States in 2023.
