The Dean’s Faculty Award is an award that is presented to a faculty member who has made an extensive impact within their own department. Since the departments eligible are biology, chemistry and biochemistry, computer science, earth science, industrial technology, mathematics and physics, my major is not included.

My opinion on whether or not only tenured or tenure-track instructors should be given the award is actually divided. 

I understand why CHAS would want to only include tenured instructors versus non-tenured faculty.

Awarding professors who have worked hard to provide the best education for students who attend the University is something that should be awarded. 

However, I do understand that just because someone has only been here a certain amount of time does not mean they aren’t contributing to these departments in an effective manner. There are plenty of professors that I have had that have come and gone, but their impact on me was monumental to my academic success. 

The issue may not be a big one, but perhaps CHAS could consider either changing the rules for the award qualifications or making a separate category for faculty members who are new to the University and have already made a prolific impact in their department. 

The same could also happen regarding an additional award, perhaps by awarding a tenured professor with a lifetime achievement award or an award celebrating the many years of success they have had here at the University. 

Regardless of awards, I urge everyone to appreciate professors and faculty members who put all of their energy into the teachings and activities within the classroom. Knowledge is power and where would we be in this world without amazing educators?
