The Northern Iowa Panthers men’s basketball recently landed their fourth transfer of the offseason in Grayson Uelman from North Dakota Fighting Hawks men’s basketball. The 6-foot-2 point guard is known for his 3-point shooting and his ability to attack the lane and create for teammates.

After losing Trey Campbell to graduation and RJ Taylor to the transfer portal, UNI needed a true point guard to run the offense. Uelman filled that role last season for North Dakota, averaging 16.8 points and 2.4 assists while shooting 49.7% from the field. The Excelsior, Minnesota, native scored in double figures in 29 games, including 10 games with at least 20 points.

Uelman was especially effective late in the season. In the Summit League Tournament, he averaged 31 points per game during North Dakota’s run to the championship game. His top performance came against Denver Pioneers men’s basketball, where he scored 41 points in an 83-67 win. With UNI’s strong postseason history, adding a player who can perform in high-pressure moments could be a major boost.

The 2025-26 season marked Uelman’s first full year of action after redshirting in 2024-25. In a February interview with Midco Sports, Uelman said the decision helped his development.

“It helped me a ton, just getting into the groove of things, learning how to travel and doing my schoolwork,” Uelman said. “I got a feel for college sports because it’s a lot different from high school.”

Uelman joins a UNI transfer class that includes Ian Smikle (Tulsa), Tate McCubbin (Austin Peay) and Carson Vis (Western Michigan). All three could compete for starting roles. Uelman, however, appears to be the likely starting point guard heading into the fall and will look to build on a strong start to his college career.
